Traveling nurse, Victoria Windhaven, never expected that her assigned bodyguard on her journey to the Alaskan mining camp of Glittering Mountain would be the last man she ever wanted to lay eyes on. That is the arrogant, over-confident, self-absorbed Brant MacQuaid. The same man who, five years ago, had left her sister at the altar in St. Louis. Victoria may have been a young teenager back then, but she understood the pain and humiliation he’d put her sister through. Her sister may have been able to move on, marrying Victoria’s old beau, as a matter of fact. But Victoria had not.

Last she’d heard, Brant MacQuaid had become a ruthless bounty hunter, just one-notch above a criminal in her book. Now here they were thrown together in Skagway, Alaska, committed to spending several long weeks together on the road with only young Dr. Cooper Sullivan and the stage driver, Gus, as companions.

It’s just Brant’s raw luck to draw Victoria Windhaven as his assignment and her womanly body as the one he’s paid to guard. She’s grown up a lot since he’s last seen her, but her scathing tongue is still giving out lashes. Imagine his surprise when it turns out she’s got a vulnerable side, one that bears the scars of a failed relationship. Still, he knows he’s persona non grata by anyone named Windhaven. But he’s on another mission, one that will net him probably the biggest, and baddest, bounty of his career. Only telling Victoria will only complicate things and bring down her already low opinion of him.

When Cooper is captured by the very gang Brant hunting, due to their need for a doctor, Brant might just have to come clean—and just when things have started to thaw with his lovely boss.

Kate Bridges has crafted a thrilling story with a hero and heroine who both must face their fears before they can confront their growing feelings for each other. Victoria is capable and confident as a nurse, but not as a woman. Brant may be adept at getting his man, but he could use a few lessons in wooing a female.  This is a fast-paced, sensuous novel that makes the Alaskan frontier a very hot place!
