It’s 1896 and a grown up Lizzie McKetrrick, Holt McKettrick’s daughter, is bringing home a beau this Christmas from San Francisco to meet the McKetrrick clan.  But when an avalanche hits the train they are traveling on just miles from Indian Rock, Lizzie sees a side of Whitley Carson that just doesn’t measure up to the standard her McKettrick family has established.  But Doctor Morgan Shane sure does.

Dr. Shane is traveling to Indian Rock to set up a practice at the invitation of Kade McKettrick. He’s escaping from his own demons, demons he hopes he has left behind in Chicago along with his broken heart.  He can’t help but be attracted to the feisty and ever hopeful Miss McKettrick as she takes charge of the situation and proves more help than hinderance, unlike her young man, as they set about ministering to the injured. Lizzie is sure her relatives will arrive.  They are McKettricks after all, and McKettricks don’t let things like a little snow impede them.  She kindles that hope in her bosom even as attraction flares for the young and very competent doctor.

As time ticks on and her hopes start to wane, fellow passenger Mr. Christian manages to bring Christmas cheer to the flagging spirits of the stranded passengers.  However, when he gets felled by frostbite after looking for help and bringing back a Christmas tree, it seems that Christmas aboard the train is going to be a sad affair.  If only her family would arrive in time.  Of course, she has to face the truth about Whitley. She can’t marry him as she’d planned.  And if she does get out of this, what will she do about her attraction to Dr. Shane?  And just where has Mr. Christian gotten to this time?

This delightful Christmas tale is sure to bring a smile to readers’ lips.  Filled with special characters and brimming with hope and good cheer, it’s the perfect antidote in this time of uncertainty.  For here, even faced with the gravest of dangers, like another avalanche, true mettle surfaces, hope prevails and faith doesn’t falter, no matter how grim the situation gets. That’s the spirit of Christmas and Ms. Miller does a wonderful job of making the reader feel that spirit.  And it’s just nice to be back among the McKettrick clan where this reader felt right at home.
