A Reason to Believe is
a captivating, sensual story about two people whose past choices
haunt their present and threaten their future.
When widow Dulcie McDaniel
finds Rye Forrester knocking on her cabin door, she's wary as to why
the handsome stranger would be willing to work her farm for just
room and board. But, as a single mother who had just watched her
drunk of a father get lynched for a murder he didn't commit, she's
desperately in need of help. Having made bad choices before in her
past, including her choice of husband and her decision on how to pay
for transportation back to Texas after her husband's death, Dulcie
vows to keep the stranger at a distance, no matter how much she's
attracted to him.
Rye Forrester has come to the
McDaniel farm with a purpose and a guilty conscience. He too has
made some bad decisions in the past, including hooking up with
Dulcie's husband while they were in the Calvary and accidentally
causing his death. Trying to make amends, Rye has come to help his
friend's widow. What he doesn't expect to find is a feisty woman and
a sweet child who burrow into his heart. Afraid if Dulcie finds out
his role in her husband's death she'll refuse his help, he keeps his
past secret.
Both Dulcie and Rye are
complex characters with flaws that make them all too real and
Maureen McKade skillfully reveals them to the reader layer by layer.
You can't help but admire Dulcie for her sense of family and duty
and sympathize with her struggles against loneliness and the desire
she feels for her hired hand. Rye is a hard working man whose
tenderness, compassion and integrity are at odds with the brand he
will carry on his back for the rest of his life. He's struggling to
find a place in the world after losing everything of importance.
Duclie's passionate nature and courage beckon him. Can these two
people not only forgive each other's past but their own mistakes to
take a chance on a future together?
Maureen McKade makes us care
about her characters, despite their weaknesses and because of their
fortitude. She transports us into their world using details that
allow the reader to experience the rhythm and struggles of frontier
farm life. A Reason to Believe is an inspiring, passionate
story that kept me turning the pages. I can't wait to read the next
book in this series about the Forrester brothers.
