Be careful what you wish for. Advertising account executive Delaney Marshall wished for a man with old-fashioned manners who knew how to treat a woman. She didn’t expect to cross an unfamiliar bridge and find herself back in Phoenix in 1888. Of course, she had no idea why she has suddenly stepped back in time or what were the circumstances that led her to this moment. Not even when she meets Dr. Gabriel Whitman.
It’s safe to say that Dr. Whitman has never met a woman like Delaney Marshall, particularly one with such an independent nature. At first he’s intrigued and then, when he hears her fantastical tale, he’s mystified. But it’s a testament to Delaney that he actually believes her, even if he is a man of science.
Most of the town accepts her public version of “just passing through” and she fits in remarkably well with many of the single woman in the town who have found their own way in the West. But there are a few men, and one in particular, who don’t like a woman telling them what is right or wrong in the way they handle animals or people. A confrontation is brewing and despite Dr. Whitman’s best efforts at keeping Delaney out of trouble, it just may not be enough.
As Delaney sorts through what is really important to her, she can’t deny her attraction to Dr. Whitman and his gentlemanly ways. Her intellectual equal, she’s more than a little fascinated with the town doctor. Dr. Whitman resists falling for a woman he can never have and whose only goal is to get back to the twenty-first century but somehow his heart isn’t listening.
This romance also provides an interesting slice-of-life look at Arizona in 1888 through the eyes of a modern woman. A pleasant romance with likeable characters that explores what we value in life and the importance of finding our calling. |
