This fantasy set in 1881, Redemption, Texas opens
with Lucy Firr, the Devil’s daughter, at a wife auction with her
sights set on only one man Jedidiah Caine. She needs to disarm him
in order to get to his widowed sister-in-law who is with child. She
needs that baby’s soul to buy her freedom from her father. Without
it, she will be forced to remain in Hell for an eternity.
After some bold maneuvering the deed is done and she
is the not-so-blushing bride of Jed Caine. She’ll need both Jed’s
soul and his sister-in-law Maggie’s in order to take the child’s
soul. To get Jed’s soul she needs to have him so in love with her
that he’ll do anything for her, including selling out Maggie. Lucy
sets about claiming him the way you would expect a Devil’s Daughter
to—she tries to seduce him.
To Lucy’s surprise and initial disgust, Jed is too
honorable to take Lucy without first earning her respect and trust.
Apparently, he’s looking for a real marriage partnership. Worse, in
the meantime, he expects her to pull her weight and to care for
Maggie who everyone thinks is going crazy because the woman claims
someone is going to take her child. Maybe she’s not so mad after
all.
Jed’s never met a woman like Lucy. Sexy and
alluring, she’s a temptation he’s having trouble resisting. Yet
she’s hiding something, something that’s causing her shame. And
he’ll be damned if he’ll take advantage of her. She came to him a
beautiful, arrogant woman but she’s proving to be persistent,
determined and courageous. Attempting unfamiliar chores and taking
on the burden of ranch work, she’s earned his admiration and
something more, something Jed never expected to feel for a wife in a
marriage of convenience—love.
While resisting at first, over time Lucy has come to
enjoy the sense of accomplishment she gets from working the ranch.
And she marvels at the patience and tolerance her very attractive
husband exhibits as she learns her tasks. She’s not supposed to
feel any human emotions, but something is happening, something
strange and oddly wonderful. Could it be that what she feels is
love? But even if she could there would be no future with Jed
because if she doesn’t get his soul and the baby’s, she’ll be sent
to hell. If she does get his soul, he’ll be damned for an
eternity. And now her brother’s come to call.
Laura Drewry has penned an original, creative and
humorous story with a seemingly irresolvable conflict. With strong
characters and an intriguing plot, those pages will be turning to
see if Lucy and Jed can possibly have a happily ever after. |
