Set at the time of Custer’s
last battle and at the fort commanded by General Custer,
Love’s Last Stand is packed with equal parts history and
romance.
Noona Willard is visiting her
sister, Helen, and Helen’s husband, Kilby Mead, a Lieutenant in
Custer’s army and a former beau of Noona’s. On the journey to Fort
Abraham Lincoln, Noona meets reporter, Spencer Quinlan, who has come
to record Custer’s forthcoming campaign against the “hostiles.”
Sparks fly between Noona and Spencer but Noona tamps them down.
She’s a respectable schoolteacher and since her one true love
married her sister, she isn’t interest in any other man, or so she
tells herself. Still Spencer makes his presence known once the party
arrives at the fort, while Noona tries to concentrate on making her
pregnant sister happy.
When a picnic turns dangerous
and Noona and Helen are abducted by Indians, the adventure begins as
Spencer Quinlan, not Kilby Mead, chases after them. All this occurs
against the sweeping backdrop of Custer’s last battle and amidst the
growing romance between Noona and Spencer.
Jane Toombs deftly brings
history to life weaving real people in with fictional characters to
create an intriguing story. She pays homage to the mysticism of
Indian culture and adeptly guides the reader through the frontier’s
challenges and the period’s politics. With strong characters, plenty
of adventure, and a stirring romance, there is something here for
everyone.
