With
likeable characters and a fascinating story, Luck of the Draw
is a highly enjoyable debut from author Julie Lence.
To
protect herself and her brother from their abusive father, Paige
Morgan must help her father cheat and rob unsuspecting poker
players. When their latest mark, Royce Weston, catches onto their
little scheme, Paige has no choice but to tell him the truth about
the plan and let him go before any harm can come to him. Angry over
the deception, Royce leaves but not before placing a searing kiss on
the lovely Paige's lips.
Knowing
that her father beat her sister for defying him, Paige knows she'll
face her father's wrath when he finds out…and she is not wrong.
Left for dead after a brutal beating at the hands of her father, she
is found and taken in by a young boy and his family…a family that
includes her last mark, Royce Weston.
Burned
by women in his past, Royce Weston does not trust anyone of the
female gender and certainly doesn't like having them on the ranch.
So it is an unpleasant surprise to find out that his father and
brothers have taken in a young woman…a young woman who tried to
cheat and rob him and whose kiss still haunts him.
When
Paige awakens, she is unable to remember any of her past or who she
is. All she knows is that she feels safe at the ranch with the
Weston men and soon finds her place in their home and family. But
she cannot help but wonder about her past and suspects Royce knows
more about it than he lets on.
Royce
is suspicious of Paige's motives for being at the ranch especially
when she awakens and claims that she cannot remember who she is or
any of her past. Convinced she is lying, he sets out to prove that
like other women, Paige is a liar and cannot be trusted. However, as
he spends more time with her, he realizes that perhaps she is not
what he thought.
With
great characters and an intriguing plot, Luck of the Draw is
a wonderful and fast-paced story that grabs the reader's attention
and does not let go. Royce and Paige make a perfect couple and their
banter and small battles left me smiling as I waited to see what
would happen next. The amnesia storyline was also very interesting.
Paige struggled to remember, but was fearful of what she would find
out about herself and I couldn't help but feel for her. Luck of
the Draw was a promising debut from Julie Lence and I look
forward to reading more from this talented author.
