When
Judge Jacobsen summons Carrie Smith to his chambers in Sweetcream,
Texas, she knows trouble is brewing, but she never expects that
she’ll be married to a stranger by the end of the day in order to
save the ranch she inherited from her grandfather.
Only it’s not her ranch, but one she now has to share with
her new groom, the son of her grandfather’s estranged and now
deceased business partner and the man designated to be her husband
in the signed will.
Jed
Jones seems like a nice enough cowboy and, if they’d had time to
court proper, Carrie might have even fallen for the man.
But forced into a sham marriage at the eleventh hour has her
wondering if the will is even real and why her Granddaddy never gave
any hint that there would be conditions to her inheritance,
especially given its significance.
Carrie, however, is nothing if not practical and she is
determined to make the best of the situation as long as Jed Jones
doesn’t take liberties, shows her respect and keeps his
hands—and everything else—to himself.
Jed
just wants his share of the land.
Having a pretty and capable wife seems like icing on the
cake—except for the fact he can’t touch her.
He’s going to do his best to be a gentleman but it’s a
challenge he’s not sure he can meet. They are married after all.
When
Carrie starts investigating, past secrets come to light and when
Jed’s grandmother comes to call, things really get complicated.
Whether the young couple can ever make a go of the marriage,
even if they want to, is half the fun of this story.
Ms.
Hanson has a distinctive voice and a wonderful turn of phrase that
makes you feel like you’re sitting across from your best friend
sharing a cup of coffee and a little gossip about the neighbors.
With just the right dash of quirkiness, the characters are
all likeable making this a book to curl up with when you’re in the
mood for some company.
