The preacher’s daughter, Emily McBride has a secret—and someone is blackmailing her because of it.  Alone after the death of her parents, the small town California librarian is also attracting her share of masculine attention.

Seth Wright, an Arizona lawman, is recruited by mutual friends to help Emily McBride, and deliver a marriage proposal from Phoenix widower, Athens Garrett, his boss. Taking on the guise of a dandified poet so as not to arouse Emily’s suspicions, Seth sets out to get to the bottom of the blackmail scheme and the secret causing Emily problems. A professed ladies man, Seth also intends to use his considerable charm to persuade Emily to marry his boss.

But Emily is set on maintaining her independence, fighting her own battles and keeping her secrets.  That is until she looks into the poet’s crystal blue eyes and sees a kindred soul.  Seth never expected a slender woman who dresses like Calamity Jane to inspire him with poetry, but Emily’s innocent curiosity, determination and grit has done just that.

With his boss’ proposal undelivered, the blackmailer making threats, one of Emily’s suitors creating havoc and Emily asking him to tutor her in the romance department, Seth’s at risk for losing his heart to a woman who believes he’s immune to a lady’s charm.

With a sexy hero pretending to by a fancy man, a shy librarian who is writing scandalous novels, marvelous secondary characters like the testosterone-infused Garrett brothers and snappy dialog, there are bound to be a few misunderstandings in this humorous tale.

Beth Ciotta has written a light-hearted romance that will keep you smiling with each turn of the page. The juxtaposition of modern sentiments with a historic western setting only adds to the fun.  If you want a fast, amusing read, a sexy romance and an intriguing mystery, this book is for you.  It’s definitely a book for my keeper shelf.  I can’t wait for her next series.
