When Rose MacClarron offered to help Serenity Springfield escape the brutality of her fiancée and the prospect of a forced marriage, she never expected that Rose had plans of her own or that those plans included her widowed grandson. Cajoled into becoming governess to Rose's granddaughters as a way to escape a frightening future and keep her dark secrets, Serenity is unprepared for the emotions she feels when she meets the tall, handsome, stoic man that is the little girls' father.

Rancher Collin MacClarron is still grieving the loss of his wife and a daughter. Having sent his other four daughters to live with their grandmother where he knows they will be better cared for than with him, he is not ready either emotionally or materially to accept them back into his world. Certainly not with a single woman as their governess. What could his grandmother be thinking?

When the entourage arrives in Dry Gulch, Collin finds out. Though a marriage of convenience is not what either Serenity or Collin wants, circumstances have suddenly made it more appealing. Serenity needs protection from her fiancée, the unconscionable Rudgewick Tarrington, who has followed her to Dry Gulch. Collin hasn't the heart to turn his lassies away now that they have come back to him and to keep them he needs a wife who can mother his little girls. Neither can fully deny the attraction between them either.

With a leap of faith, Serenity marries Collin and Collin accepts Serenity despite his concerns and the secrets she keeps. But secrets never stay buried for long. Finding out Serenity's is hard work, more than a man still emotionally crippled may be able to handle despite his attraction to her. And when her secrets threaten the little girls and the man she has come to care for, Serenity may have to make a hard choice for their sake.

Catherine Stang has written a pleasing romance wrapped in the comfort of a family bound by both love and tragedy. Chock full of characters with multiple story threads, it is Serenity and Collin's story that will keep you turning those pages as they help each other work through the miseries of the past for the promise of the future.
