Clint Hayworth has come home
to the Double H ranch after his father’s death to sell the homestead
that holds bad memories of a philandering father. He’s shocked to
find a twenty-one year old widow ensconced in the place. The fact
that she’s beautiful only confirms Clint’s assumptions that she
manipulated his ailing father into marrying her so she could get her
hands on the Hayworth money and ranch and live the high-life at his
expense. Now he’s being told he only owns half the ranch and his
conniving step-mother owns the rest. Worse, she’s refusing to sell.
Tess Morgan Hayworth found
both sanctuary and a husband at the Double H. She loved Hoyt
Hayworth in her own way. And when he’d asked her to marry him and
extracted a promise to never sell the ranch, she couldn’t deny the
man who’d kept her safe despite knowing all her secrets. Because
Tess Morgan has a lot of secrets and a bloody past that forced her
to change her name and run from it as far as her legs could carry
her. But now Hoyt’s son has shown up and despite his arrogance and
argumentative nature, she’s drawn to the handsome cowboy she’s sworn
to fight.
Clint doesn’t trust his
“stepmother” despite the fact every cowhand on the place seems to
respect her. She’s as determined to hold onto the ranch as he is to
sell it. It will be a contest of wills, one he’s sure he’ll win. In
the meantime, someone’s been causing mischief on the place and he
aims to find out who it is before anything more happens or anyone,
like the widow, gets hurt. And he’ll make sure no pretty little
piece of baggage with more pluck, sense and persistence than he’d
imagined will make a fool out of him. No sirree.
Charlene Sands has crafted
strong characters in Clint and Tess. Evenly matched, they square off
against each other and come out firing, tempers flaring. It’s
anybody’s guess who will win—or if either will be able to recognize
the prize. Hot and sexy, this is a solid western romance with a
heroine and hero to match
