Berkeley Historical Romance

When Texas Senator Mayfield's daughter, Liberty, first meets horse breeder and trainer Tobin McMurray, she is not impressed with the stoic, enigmatic cowboy. But her father has bought one of Tobin's horses as a wedding present for her upcoming marriage to Captain Samuel Buchanan, hoping she'll get over her fear of the animals.

Captain Buchanan insists she learn how to ride a horse. He's insistent about a lot of things these days making Liberty feel more bullied than loved as she questions her choice in a husband-or was Captain Buchanan really her father's choice?

Tobin's been recruited by Buchanan to teach her to ride while the Senator, fearing a plot against his life for his stance on Mexican issues, recruits Tobin for a very special mission--keeping his daughter safe incase he's attacked. When the attack occurs, Tobin rescues Liberty from both the danger of the siege and the physical abuse of her fiancée. As prearranged, he and Liberty head for the sanctuary of the McMurray Ranch at Whispering Mountain.

Tobin has lived on Whispering Mountain all his life, rarely venturing off except when absolutely necessary for supplies or to sell a horse. He's uncomfortable around people and more so around women, except his sister Sage. But something about Liberty sneaks up on him and captures his heart. Maybe it's that her experience in life has been so different from his, maybe it's her femininity that speaks to his protective nature, maybe it's her ability to say what's on her mind or the grit and determination she shows despite her pampered history. But over the course of their journey, love comes calling and Tobin tumbles hard from this social butterfly so out of place on the Texas range.

Liberty has never met a man like Tobin. His quiet strength, genuine concern and fierce protectiveness mark him as different from the ambitious, glib-tongued, self-absorbed men in her life. Though reticent to talk, when it comes to loving, Tobin's feelings come through loud and clear and Liberty responds in kind. Out on the Texas plains she experiences a kind of freedom she's never known before-a freedom to be herself, to love and be loved unconditionally. Having tasted passion, she can't seem to get enough of her unfettered cowboy. Her name may be Liberty, but until she meets Tobin she's never experienced real freedom.

But men are after them, Liberty and the sanctity of the ranch are threatened and Buchanan's men are gunning for Tobin. Even if they get through these ordeals, can there be any common ground between a woman who pines for the bright lights and social world of Washington, D.C. and a man who is most comfortable living the life of a recluse on an isolated mountain ranch in West Texas?

Jodi Thomas has written a poignant love story about what we sometimes must give up in order to be free to fulfill our potential, achieve our destiny and find true love. Rich in history with finely drawn characters and sizzling hot romance, this is a book I'll read again and again. Thomas is a master at pulling the reader into the world she creates and this book is no exception. One of her best!
