Jodi
Thomas begins her new series, Whispering Mountain, with this novel set in 1854 about a Texas Ranger and a woman on
the run. When ruggedly handsome half-breed Travis McMurray returns
home to the family ranch he still feels like an outsider in town.
He runs into Rainey Adams but he never dreams that the beauty
he can’t stop thinking about is not only a runaway but capable of
stealing his horse. He
pursues her not only for his
horse and ends up shot and unconscious. Rainey tends to him briefly but fear of detection spurs her
to flee. She goes to Austin
to insure that she will never be returned to her home to face her
harsh father and an arranged marriage.
Unable to keep Travis from her mind and worried about him,
she takes the bold step of writing him.
Travis is recovering, slowly, and though he wants to pursue
Rainey and find out exactly why she has unsettled him, he doesn’t
even know her name. Her
letters, however, lend a healing strength, a purpose to his life,
and he soon seeks her out, eventually landing in Austin . Texas Ranger trouble,
however, follows him. How
he finds and courts Rainey and how the Ranger trouble also places
Rainey in danger provides the adventure and mystery in this story.
While passion bubbles between them, the reader should know
love scenes are subdued. This
is a story of complex and compelling characters that find each other
but need to trust each other before they allow themselves to love.
The journey is worth it! |
